James "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons (1874 – 1966) began his career in 1885 working as a stable boy, exercise boy, reinsman, and jockey. After nearly ten unsuccessful years as a jockey, he became too heavy for the job and became a trainer. He went on to have one of the most successful careers in racing history, spanning seventy years from 1894 to 1963 with 2,275 race wins.
